According to the ancient principles of Yoga and Ayurveda, the human body is made up of 5 elements- water, air, fire, earth and space. The fingers of our hands denote these elements as below:

These five elements further constitute the three doshas:

  • Vata (air + space)
  • Pitta (fire + water)
  • Kapha (Space + earth)

Hence, the whole concept of Ayurveda and Yoga aims to balance these five elements which would eventually balance all three doshas and bring optimum mind-body health.

How the Yoga mudras balance body elements?

To form a yoga mudra, one or more fingers touch the thumb to complete an electric circuit so that the electromagnetic current can flow through the fingers and balance the elements represented by those fingers.

This mudra stimulates the three prominent elements of the body- earth (ring finger), water (little finger) and fire (thumb) to eradicate any sorts of blockages and ensure smooth flow of prana throughout the body. Regular practice of prana mudra would build a sort of energy bank in your body to keep you energized throughout the day.
